Ghanaians mourn as they remember Christian Atsu

Ghanaians celebrate the birthday of former Black Stars and Newcastle winger Christian Atsu as they remember his exploits as a footballer and a philanthropist.

The late Christian Atsu Twasam as many call him was an integral member of Coach Akwasi Appiah and Avram Grant's Black Stars and he won the best player at the 2015 AFCON after leading Ghana to the final only for them to lose to Ivory Coast.

Atsu made a name for himself in Europe as he played for clubs like FC Porto, Chelsea, Vitesse, Everton, Bournemouth, Malaga and Newcastle United before moving to Al Raed in the Saudi Pro League before ending his career at Hatayspor.

Atsu was declared missing on 6th February 2023 immediately after the 2023 Turkey–Syria earthquake; he was feared to be among those trapped under the rubble of Hatayspor's headquarters in Antakya following the quake.

On 18 February, confirmation was received by his agent that his body was recovered from the rubble of the building he was residing in. News outlets reported his death at approximately 6:00 am GMT.

Christian Atsu would be 33 years today had he been alive.

May his soul continue to rest in peace.
